A LITTLE ABOUT UPWARD:
Upward Sports, the world's largest Christian sports program for
children, was created with a vision to provide the best sports
experience possible for every child. Each year some 1 million
people around the world play, coach, referee, or volunteer in
Upward Sports leagues and camps hosted by more than 2,600
churches. Anyone - children and volunteers of any faith or no
faith - can participate in Upward Sports. Specifically
designed for children in K5- sixth grade, Upward Sports aim to
bring out "the winner" in every child - regardless of the game's
score. For more information check out www.upward.org.
In 2004 HBC decided it would host its first Upward Basketball
League and after just one year it was evident this league would
continue. The numbers exploded over the next couple of years
getting up to 384 children, but eventually leveling off to just
fewer than 200. Since 2007 alone God has allowed us to share the
gospel with 1, 064 children through Upward leagues and camps.
HOW THE LEAGUE WORKS @
HBC
Upward is generally a 12 week program that consists of 4 weeks
of practice only and 8 additional weeks that include practices and
games. Our goal during these 12 weeks is to use basketball and
cheerleading as an excuse to share the gospel with young
people.

How To Sign Up: Shortly after school begins in the fall every
child, in Kindergarten through 6th grade, comes home
with an Upward Registration Brochure. On the brochure are dates and
times that indicate when and where the registration/evaluation time
for each age group takes place. (September)
Registration Process: Parents are asked to bring their
child(ren) to the evaluation to get them registered for the season.
Here, registration forms and league fees will be collected, each
child's height will be measured, and uniforms will be sized. (Late
October/ Early November)
Evaluation Process: After each child is registered he/she will
run through some drills so the coaches can evaluate each child's
skill level. (NOTE: children who are in kindergarten or
cheerleading will not go through the evaluation process.) Drills
will include dribbling, shooting, and defensive slides. Each child
will be scored based on their ability. This is done for the sole
purpose of dividing the teams evenly. The children will never know
their own, nor any other child's score. (Late October/ Early
November)
Practice Nights: Practices will be held for one hour every week
for 12 weeks. Typically, practices fall on Monday, Tuesday, or
Thursday between 5 and 9pm. Coaches will lead practice in such a
way that will better their skills in basketball/cheerleading and
widen their knowledge about who Jesus is and what he has done for
us. (Begin in December)
Game Days: All games will be held on Saturday mornings/early
afternoons. Games consist of six 6 minute periods. At half time of
each game, a 3-5 minute devotion will be presented to the parents.
This is also the time that cheerleaders will perform for parents.
(January/February)
Upward Awards Celebration: This takes place after the Upward
season has ended. Each year we invite an entertainer to perform for
us while presenting the gospel. We also include some worship,
giving gifts, and an alter call for children or parents who need to
make decisions for Christ. This year we invited Matt and Jenny Hogg
with Remix Education and had a blast. You can check them out at www.remixeducation.com.

HOW THE CAMP WORKS @
HBC
Camp will last 4 or 5 days throughout any given week in the
summer. Children entering 1st or 2nd grade
will attend the morning camp, and children entering 3rd,
4th, 5th, or 6th grade will attend
the afternoon camp. Camp usually lasts 3 hours each day and
includes skills and drills, bible study, snack, and scrimmaging.
It's a great way to get your child ready for the season.
