The Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation provides scholarships to ministerial students, funds for Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children and a tithe to the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. Funds are distributed annually from the earnings on foundation gifts and investments.
The idea for the foundation was conceived in the mind of Mr. Ott Elliott during the early 1930's at the height of the great depression. This was a time in our history, when men were losing their farms and businesses, and when everyone seemed to be in the "Valley of the Shadow". Mr. Elliott made a commitment to God, promising the Lord, that should he acquire any material possessions, they would be given back to be used in His service.
Mr. Elliot was faithful to his commitment and, in June of 1954, the Foundation was organized with a board of directors chosen from the membership of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide financial assistance to qualified, dedicated persons who are preparing themselves for Christian service, and to financially assist the Baptist Child Care program in Kentucky.
The beginnings were small. However, with the passing years, the Foundation has continuously grown. All contributions are placed in a perpetual fund and only the earnings from the investments may be used.
The Foundation is incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The office of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church serves as the office for the Foundation. The board is comprised of ten directors elected for a five year term, with two being selected each year to succeed the two whose term of office expires. The officers consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
In keeping with the purpose of the Foundation and following the admonition of the Apostle Paul as stated in First Timothy 6:19, "Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life", and believing, "It is more blessed to give than to receive", the Foundation directs that the earnings from the investments be used with 45% going to the Kentucky Child Care Program, and 45% for the training and education of men and women going into full time Christian service. The remaining ten percent of its earnings are contributed to the Harrodsburg Baptist Church as representative of the tithe required by our Lord.
Through the years, many dedicated people have remembered the Foundation with their material possessions. Gifts, including contributions in monies, real estate and securities are regularly received as memorials to departed loved ones, funds from wills of interested persons, and some choose to include this organization as part of their regular Christian giving. Today, this extension of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church is one of the largest Foundations of its kind within the state of Kentucky.
