Church History

Welcome to Harrodsburg Baptist Church. That greeting has been extended in various ways since 1839, when Baptists assembled in Harrodsburg and united in forming a church. William Vaughn, one of the great preachers of his day, led 12 charter members, "including the Slaughters, the Burfords, the Alexanders, etc. all staunch and godly persons, and unsurpassed by any members of the state."

Our first building, Republican Meeting House, was built around 1840. The second building was built in 1901 and it was razed to make room for our current sanctuary in 1961. Since those early days of 1839, 32 other pastors have followed William Vaughn. Some great Baptist leaders have served as pastor here. Dr. E.Y. Mullins, who later was President of Southern Seminary and the Baptist World Alliance and Dr. Fred Brown, also a former Southern Baptist Convention President, are two of the outstanding examples. Our previous pastor, Dr. W. Robert (Bob) DeFoor, served here from 1979 to 2007.

"Vision 21" shaped the church during the mid 1990's. That planning process led to many changes in our church. We renovated areas in our educational and sanctuary buildings, and also added a new elevator and entry way. We began the His Kids Christian Learning Center, a day care program that has expanded today to affect almost 100 children each day.

The church also began our Class on Main, a time of discipleship emphasis. These Biblically based studies deal with most any issue that will help us achieve our vision of "a Christian community, helping people become devoted followers of Christ."

Perhaps the most significant change has been in developing our Recreation and Outreach Center. In 2000, the church purchased the property of St. Andrew Catholic Church and began utilizing that property in a ministry to reach and care for people. In December, 2003, we dedicated our new building and the ROC had about 65,000 visitors during the first year.

We operate an "open" building, with many people using the walking track, gym floor, youth center, and activities center for many different activities. One of our largest programs is our Upward Basketball and Cheerleading, held each winter.

Thank you for dropping in on us today. We invite you to worship with us if you are in the area and to pray for us as we accept the challenge of being on mission for our Lord in the 21st century.
