The Harrodsburg Baptist Church was organized in 1839 and their
first house of worship was the Republican Meeting House. This
structure, located on the south side of Office Street, facing the
court House, was built in 1827 for the use of the Methodist
Episcopal Church. Old deeds specify that the building was for
the use of the Methodists two Sundays a month and that the meeting
house could be used by all other Christian societies of worshippers
of God who worship in a decent, orderly and peaceable
manner... The Baptist congregation grew under the pastorate
of William Vaughn and they agreed to purchase the building in
1840. It has been noted that the building was used as a
hospital during the Civil War. Its ownership remained in the
hand of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and in their use until the
spring of 1948 when, because of the deterioration and the need for
parking space, it became necessary to tear it down.
In 1899 Harrodsburg Baptist Church was given a lot on Main
Street by J.A. Shuttlworth on the condition that a church building
be erected and if ever the land was not used for a church, it would
revert back to the Shuttlworth family. Taking advantage of
this gift, Harrodsburg Baptist Church constructed their second
house of worship on this lot and dedicated it in 1901 during the
pastorate of Dr. J. Frank Williams. An education facility was
added between 1947-1950 while Evans T. Mosley was pastor.
Again the Harrodsburg Church outgrew their sanctuary and this
building was torn down in 1960 to make room for a parking lot and
another new house of worship.
Under the leadership of Pastor Wallace H. Carrier, the present
sanctuary and fellowship hall were built and then dedicated in
October 1960. The Recreation Outreach Center, the Christian
Activity Center, and the Student Activity Center opened up in 2004
off of Chiles Street. All of this was done under the
direction of Pastor Robert Defoor. THe church called Rev.
Wayne Spivey to be our Senior Pastor in November of 2008.
